Based on photographs of vernacular structures in Los Angeles, the computer-manipulated images are slightly abstracted and highly saturated with artificial hues. Layered over the image are simple geometric forms of flat colors. The effect is a painterly intervention of architecture. Like Gordon Matta-Clark's cutting pieces, Criqui's paintings demonstrate the artist's reworking of three-dimensional form. The fields of flat colors simultaneously act as passages of void and as stimulators of flatness, emphasizing the two-dimensionality of facades and surfaces.

The influence of the Los Angeles landscape quite literally takes form in these paintings in subject matter and in the use of color and light. Fundamentally however Criqui's devotion to painting as an ifinitely vialble form of art making. Criqui was included in David Pagel's 1998 exhibition "Painting from Another Planet" at Deitch Projects in New York and at the 1999 Biennial at the Orange County Museum of Art in Newport Beach, these playfully colored, highly abstracted
paintings stand as contemporary reworkings of a traditional form. His works lie between formal purism, a vernacular sentiment, and an interest in traditional genres in a contemporary context.
