We are pleased to announce an exhibition of early prints by Bruce Nauman. The exhibition takes it’s cue from Disappearing Acts, Nauman’s third major career survey to date which opened at MoMA, MoMA PS1 in Queens and the Schaulager museum near Basel, Switzerland in October of this year.
The works on view represent the breadth of Cirrus’ involvement with Nauman and includes prints produced by the gallery and printshop in close collaboration with the artist.
With each of the prints selected for the exhibition, Nauman presents a scenario where an artwork’s’ ‘meaningfulness’ is derived from our participation in viewing it. In the unique case of Caned Dance, it’s meaning can also be understood based on who participated in its making. Printed by Ed Hamilton at Cirrus in 1974 “Caned Dance” can also be read as: canEd (Hamilton) dance (?)
Caned Dance is included in the portfolio Merce Cunningham, a set of seven prints recording collaborations with Merce Cunningham and The Merce Cunningham Dance Company, the other contributing artists being: John Cage, Jasper Johns, Robert Morris, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella, and Andy Warhol.
Also on view in the gallery are four new publications by American composer, performer, visual, video, and installation artist Charlemagne Palestine.
The exhibition will be on view from November 3rd, 2018 through March 2nd, 2019.
