Cirrus is pleased to present Still Bearing Visible, the gallery’s second show organized by Math Bass. The exhibition features two emerging Los Angeles artists Jenny Balin Sonenberg and Machine, each of whose work engages the themes of identity and the politics of its construction and presentation.
Machine’s paintings and ”grounding objects” on view place logos and other often-gendered symbols such as flowers and basketballs alongside one-another, creating a multi-weighted landscape reflecting on identity. The paintings main referent is traditional American quilting, replacing paint for textile to evoke a collage of history, symbols and memory. Machine is an American artist with a history in performance, sculpture, installation and painting. They have exhibited in the US, Canada and the UK. They live and in work in Los Angeles.
Jenny Balin Sonenberg’s work traces artifacts of identity. Utilizing collected information from newspapers, receipts and topographical maps, Sonenberg makes masks of transparency. Sonenberg is an interdisciplinary artist born in New York and earned her BFA in sculpture at Bennington College. Sonenberg currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
The exhibition will be on view from September 7th through December 21st, 2019.
